In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, soy sauce, black pepper, and salt. Mix until well combined.
Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into a patty.
Heat butter or oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook patties for 4-5 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
In the same skillet, cook the sliced onion until softened. Sprinkle flour over and stir for another minute.
Gradually pour in the beef broth while stirring to prevent lumps. Cook until the gravy thickens, add mushroom caps, and cook for 3-5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
Return the patties to the skillet and spoon gravy over them. Simmer a few minutes to let the flavors meld.
Serve hot over steamed white rice, topped with extra gravy if desired!
